The style is unique and wonderful, not at all chronological, at least in many places. One might think of this as a family photograph album centered around Peter, the only boy in a family of four children of Chinese descent living in Canada. Peter is the third child, the one who was to be the "king" since having a male child is so important to the fathers in this culture, maybe not so much today, but certainly in the past.And Peter wants to be a girl, wants to be like his sisters. He likes their clothing, their makeup, their activities. Although I am in my mid-seventies, I can recall so clearly how I felt similarily as a child, growing up in a male-dominated culture. Brilliant writing. Absolutely brilliant.
